WHAT IS MODERN BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY?
As a female boudoir photographer living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I find myself answering more questions about my line of photography than my work itself. Surprising, right? Most have heard of boudoir photography, but many are unfamiliar with what it is exactly. Usually, people interpreted is as “sexy photos of women”. However, this type of photography encompasses more than that.
Let’s start off by learning a little bit it’s history.
“Boudoir" originates from the French word bouder, which means "to sulk". This word was attributed to women's dressing rooms, bedroom and private salons. In terms of photography, nude or sexualized female forms have been a theme since 1840. However, boudoir photography did not officially emerged until the 1920’s and was primarily used to capture sensual and erotic images of women for their male partners.
Today, boudoir photography has evolved quite a bit. Modern boudoir photography is a celebration of body positivity, self-expression and self-love. It is no longer solely about creating erotic images for men. Rather, it focuses on capturing the beauty and sensuality of the woman being photographed. It is about all women feeling confident in their bodies, regardless of their size, shape, or age.
And as a modern boudoir photographer, our most important job is to create a comfortable and safe environment for women.
Women from all walks of life (mothers, childless, single, married, professional, full figured, 50+ years old, teachers, etc.) are booking a boudoir photoshoot for a plethora of reasons. They will use it to celebrate a new milestone or chapter of their life such as their birthday, pregnancy or divorce. To honor their current self just because they want to. Or, as a surprise gift for their romantic partner before or on their wedding day. The reasons are endless and personal.
Modern boudoir photography has come a long way from its origins. It is an empowering form of artistic photography that allows women to express themselves. While it still has roots in the traditional boudoir concept of intimacy and sensuality, it has evolved into a celebration of diversity and empowerment.
In a nutshell, boudoir has become a cool and personal thing to do.
